The Green Value System of Spiral Dynamics

What is the theory of Spiral Dynamics?

Spiral Dynamics is a model of the evolution of individuals and societies' value systems (memes). Each has its code and color with a unique set of value orientations and priorities that form its beliefs and values. People and societies dynamically move through these levels depending on the changing conditions of life, experience, and challenges that stand in their way.

Who created Spiral Dynamics?

The beginning was laid by the research of Dr. Clare W. Graves

The term Spiral Dynamics was used by Don Beck and Christopher Cowan in the book «Spiral Dynamics: Mastering Values, Leadership, and Change.»

The green value system represents a focus on community and ecology, as well as a concern for the well-being of all. It is characterized by a holistic, systems-thinking approach and values such as unity, cooperation, and sustainability. This value system is often associated with post-modern and post-industrial societies. It is considered to be the most advanced of the eight value systems in the Spiral Dynamics model.

The Green Value System through the lenses of SDTEST®

SDTEST® has 36 different VUCA polls that calculate the 13,034 correlation values between stages of development according to the theory of Spiral Dynamics and answer options of these 33 polls.

We invite curiosity about the systemic mechanisms behind this correlation. There may be hidden variables that provide alternative explanations.

In our analysis of the poll "Biggest problems facing my country," we found an intriguing positive correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.1437 between the Climate change and the Green stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.055. This positive correlation of 0.1437 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.055. This positive correlation of 0.1437 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This positive correlation of 0.1437 connects deeply with the Green value system's emphasis on ecological sustainability and harmony between humanity and nature. Seeing existence through a Green lens involves treasuring the interconnectedness of all living systems.

From this perspective, climate crisis threatens the web of life itself. Green psychology recoils at the authoritarian mindsets that would exploit ecosystems for short-term gains. So action on climate change aligns with cherished Green ideals of principle over profit, future generations over present greed.

As we analyze this climate-concern correlation further, we must examine the nuances in how Green psychology mobilizes, blocks, or hesitates in response to ecological threats.

We talked about this poll in more detail in this article.

In our analysis of the poll "Ageism’s causes," we found an intriguing positive correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.0969 between the Ageism is not the result only of interpersonal interactions and the Green stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0955. This positive correlation of 0.0969 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This positive correlation of 0.0969 resonates with the Green worldview's orientation toward analyzing interlocking social, cultural, and institutional dynamics that shape group experiences. Viewing society through a lens of interconnected systems, Green psychology sees ageism arising from complex historical biases becoming embedded in organizational policies, media stereotypes, and more.

Rather than locating prejudice solely in individual hostile behaviors, Green thinking considers how taken-for-granted assumptions are absorbed into societal structures in ways that restrict dignity and potential based on attributes like age. They feel compelled to address root causes perpetuating marginalization.

In our analysis of the poll "What will you do this week to look after your mental health?" we found an intriguing positive correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.0771 between the Connect with Others and the Green stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0756. This positive correlation of 0.0771 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This positive correlation of 0.0771 resonates with the Green worldview's orientation toward social interconnectedness and community coherence. Seeing life through a lens of holism, Green psychology recognizes empathic relationships as integral to wellness and meaning.

The Green drive for bonding flows from an expansive sense of self interdependently nested within widening circles of identity. Thus, taking time to connect authentically with trusted others nourishes not only individuals but also the larger web of being. It rejuvenates through togetherness.

In our analysis of the poll "Empathy is...", we found an intriguing positive correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.1226 between the Mirroring someone's feelings / Strongly Agree and the Green stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.096. This positive correlation of 0.1226 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This positive correlation of 0.1226 resonates with the Green worldview's orientation toward emotional attunement and socially coherent relationships. Seeing life through a lens of interconnectedness, Green psychology recognizes empathic mirroring as integral for mutual understanding and collective action.

The Green drive for communal harmony flows from an expansive sense of identity interdependently linked across widening circles of being. Thus, taking time to reflect on others’ subjective experiences not only builds bonds between individuals but also strengthens the social fabric more broadly. It fuels unity through resonance.

However, hurt can emerge if struggles remain merely mirrored without agentic empowerment. And some Green plurality harbors inner tensions between shared feelings and divergent needs. Perhaps mature Green empathy involves the balanced exchange of both resonance and wisdom over time.

In our analysis of the poll "Factors that impact team effectiveness," we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.0816 between the Impact and the Green stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0619. This negative correlation of -0.0816 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This negative correlation of -0.0816 is notable, given Green's orientation toward collective action and harmony. However, it hints at a shadow side of the caring, consensus-focused green worldview.

In the desire to allow space for every voice, Green teams can suffer analysis paralysis and lose momentum. The push to get complete agreement and avoid conflict can inadvertently suppress bold ideas or initiatives. The need for affiliation can override goal achievement.

In our analysis of the poll "Trust (by WVS)" (How much confidence you have in Labor unions?), we found an intriguing positive correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.1396 between the Quite a lot of confidence in Labor unions and the Green stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0707. This positive correlation of 0.1396 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This positive correlation of 0.1396 makes sense, given Green's focus on equality, community, and concern for the collective good. Labor unions represent vital structures for empowering everyday workers through solidarity and a shared voice countering exploitative forces.

From a systemic perspective, unions help balance workplace dynamics that otherwise concentrate power with owners over laborers. They distribute agency more equitably across stakeholders, enabling dignity and well-being for all.

Additionally, the collaboration and unity within unions reflect Green values of people coming together despite differences for the greater good. Compromise for fair compensation embodies common humanity superseding pure self-interest.

While some may see unions as breeding conflict, Green views the friction as growing pains of an expanding circle of care stretching to include the vulnerable. Some disruption brings society closer to harmony.

Green recognizes unions' alignment with its core Principles around equity, social support, and elevating marginalized voices. Confidence in this mechanism for economic justice explains the tellingly strong correlation.

In our analysis of the poll "Where would be your next most exciting opportunity?", we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.0721 between the International market leader and the Green stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0625. This negative correlation of -0.0721 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This negative correlation of -0.0721 highlights an important nuance around Green values in business contexts. While oriented toward community, Green still operates skillfully within market realities even if it doesn’t fully embrace competitive, hierarchical corporate dynamics.

The correlation suggests that those who identify with egalitarian Green principles may hesitate to pursue leadership explicitly defined in capitalist terms, like maximizing international profit and market share. However, purpose-driven leadership appealing to Green ideals around social justice and sustainability would likely attract strong engagement.

So, while not eschewing business success, Green defines leadership beyond positional power and wealth generation. Contributing to collaborative, grassroots movements that empower everyday people excites Green more than titles. Market dominance feels misaligned with Green's aims of elevating marginalized voices.

In sum, this shows Green recognizes the pragmatic necessity of business while seeking leadership opportunities that better resonate with its core values. The correlation indicates that leading transformational community projects outweighs leading multinational firms from a Green perspective. Visionary influence through compassion and empowerment eclipses desiring authority for its own sake.

In our analysis of the poll "Actions of companies in relation to personnel in the last month (Y/N)," we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.0723 between the Sent employees on unpaid vacations and the Green stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0587. This positive correlation of 0.0723 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This positive correlation of 0.0723 is notable given Green's focus on equality, relationships, and worker empowerment. Though subtle, it hints at nuances in Green's orientation during times of organizational crisis.

While unpaid leave can strain income reliance for vulnerable staff, Green also recognizes mandatory layoffs destabilize even more. Some income beats no income. Maintaining affiliation might enable smoother workforce transitions than severing whole livelihoods.

Additionally, unpaid leave suggests a potential return once conditions improve - a hiatus over termination. The correlation signals Green's attempts at creative flexibility for weathering turmoil without fully dismantling community bonds during restructuring.

Of course, the lower income itself significantly stresses well-being. But seen through a systemic lens, workforce continuity holds space for recovery. Some near-term uneven sacrifices might achieve longer-term stability.

Green reveals its paradox - hungry for ideal justice yet pragmatic. Unpaid leave risks exploitation. But in volatile contexts with constrained options, Green may correlate leave with hope and bridge-building back toward restored equilibrium.

In our analysis of the poll "What makes a boss a great leader?" we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.0854 between the Empowering their People and the Green stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0459. This negative correlation of -0.0854 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

Since empowering people has a negative correlation of -0.0854 with the Green stage, this suggests that contrary to expectations, those with Green values are less likely to view empowering employees as an essential leadership quality.

This reveals an unexpected over-focus on communal values in Green at the expense of recognizing individual needs. In its desire for equality, Green can fail to see that people require autonomy and responsibility to thrive.

Excessive Green conformity and consensus-seeking can discourage empowering individuals to take initiative and authority. Yet doing so is critical for collective success.

This reminds Green it must balance its communal orientation with respect for personal growth. Empowerment should not be seen as threatening the group. Fostering participatory leadership and self-direction for all is essential.

In our analysis of the poll "Reasons why people give up," we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.0863 between the Give up their power and the Green stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0606. This negative correlation of -0.0863 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This negative correlation of -0.0863 indicates a statistical relationship where as one variable decreases, the other tends to increase, highlighting a potential connection between giving up power and the values associated with the Green stage in Spiral Dynamics.

In the context of the green value system in Spiral Dynamics, which emphasizes community, ecology, unity, and sustainability, this negative correlation could suggest that individuals who are more inclined to give up their power may exhibit characteristics or beliefs that are less aligned with the values of the Green stage.

This negative correlation suggests that individuals aligned with the green value system are less likely to believe that people give up because they surrender their power. Green's focus on empowerment, egalitarianism, and shared responsibility may lead to a view that challenges are best met through collective action, not individual abdication.

From a green perspective, framing the issue as a personal failure to maintain power ignores systemic factors that can lead to feelings of helplessness. A holistic view considers how social inequities, lack of support networks, and oppressive structures can constrain agency.

Green emphasizes that we are all interconnected. One's ability to thrive is tied to the well-being of the community. Individualizing problems fails to harness the strength of solidarity. Resilience is found through mutual care and uplifting one another.

In our analysis of the poll "A.I. and the end of Civilization (Elon Musk)," we found an intriguing positive correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.1082 between the State should exercise control over the development of the artificial intelligence / Somewhat agree and the Green stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.09. This positive correlation of 0.1082 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This positive correlation of 0.1082 makes sense, given the Green value system represents a holistic, community-oriented worldview focused on unity, cooperation, environmental harmony, and the well-being of all. This stage values systems thinking, sustainability, and an egalitarian approach to decision-making.

In this correlation, favoring state control over AI development could resonate with Green vMeme's emphasis on collective responsibility, shared governance, and a precautionary approach to technological advancements that may impact society and the environment.

Individuals operating from the Green value system may be more inclined to advocate for centralized regulation and oversight of AI development to ensure it aligns with values of sustainability, ethical considerations, and the preservation of ecological and social harmony.

The Green vMeme's focus on inclusivity, stakeholder involvement, and consensus-based decision-making could also contribute to a preference for state-level governance and control over AI, as it may be perceived as a more democratic and participatory approach compared to leaving such a consequential technology solely in the hands of private entities or market forces.

However, it is essential to note that this correlation could also be influenced by factors such as specific concerns about AI risks, trust in governmental institutions, or personal experiences and belief systems that transcend the Green value system alone.  Analyzing the additional "Trust" poll and seeing a correlation with the Government will be beneficial.

In our analysis of the poll "My Greatest Fears," we found an intriguing positive correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.0874 between the Return to repression and the Green stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0357. This positive correlation of 0.0874 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This positive correlation of 0.0874 exceeds the critical value of 0.0357, meets the reliability criteria for further analysis, and could be explained by the Green vMeme's emphasis on inclusivity, human rights, and a rejection of oppressive or authoritarian structures that limit individual freedoms or marginalize certain groups.

Individuals operating from the Green value system may be particularly attuned to the potential risks of societal regression towards repressive policies or ideologies that could undermine hard-won progress in civil liberties, social justice, and environmental protection.

The Green vMeme's focus on ecological sustainability and harmony with the natural world could also contribute to a fear of a return to exploitative or unsustainable practices that could jeopardize the long-term well-being of both people and the planet.

Additionally, the Green stage's emphasis on inclusivity, diversity, and respect for different perspectives may heighten concerns about the potential for oppressive ideologies or systems that could marginalize or suppress certain groups or viewpoints.

In our analysis of the poll "Are you ready to receive less pay to work remotely?" we found an intriguing positive correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.0776 between the Yes, I am ready to receive 10% less pay to work remotely, and the Green stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0665. This positive correlation of 0.0776 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This positive correlation of 0.0776 exceeds the critical value of 0.0665,  meets the reliability criteria for further examination, and could be explained by the the Green vMeme's emphasis on work-life balance, environmental sustainability, and a desire to prioritize quality of life over purely financial considerations.

The Green value system represents a holistic, community-oriented worldview focused on unity, cooperation, ecological harmony, and well-being. This stage values systems thinking, sustainability, and an egalitarian approach to decision-making.

Individuals operating from the Green value system may be more inclined to appreciate the potential benefits of remote work, such as reduced commuting time, a lower environmental impact, and increased flexibility to balance professional and personal responsibilities.

The Green vMeme's focus on community and cooperation could contribute to the perception that accepting a pay cut in exchange for remote work is a reasonable trade-off. This may foster a more harmonious work-life dynamic and benefit both the individual and the broader social or ecological context.

In our analysis of the poll "Oxford Happiness Survey," we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.1816 between the Life is good / Strongly Agree and the Green stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0587. This negative correlation of -0.1816 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This negative correlation of -0.1816 is statistically significant, surpassing the critical value of 0.0587. It could be explained that those more aligned with the Green value system may be less likely to express a strong, unequivocal agreement with the sentiment that "Life is good."

This could be due to a few potential factors:
  1. The Green stage's emphasis on holistic, systems thinking may lead individuals to view life and well-being through a more nuanced, contextual lens rather than a simplistic "life is good" perspective.
  2. The Green stage's concern for the well-being of all, rather than just the individual, may make individuals more attuned to the challenges and inequities that exist in society, tempering a sense of universal life satisfaction.
  3. The Green stage's focus on sustainability and long-term thinking may lead individuals to be more cautious or critical in assessing the current state of life rather than expressing unqualified optimism.
This negative correlation highlights a potential disconnect between the Green stage's emphasis on community, ecology, and the well-being of all and the more individualistic, simplistic assessment of "life is good." It suggests that individuals in the Green stage may have a more complex, nuanced view of life and well-being, which may not align with a straightforward, positive assessment.

The Green value system is characterized by a holistic, systems-thinking approach that emphasizes community, ecology, unity, and well-being. Individuals in this stage are deeply concerned about society's interconnectedness and the need for cooperation and sustainability.

In our analysis of the poll "XING's culture assessment" (Work-life balance (terrible). Poor work-life balance - which aspects do you dislike the most?), we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.2934 between the Employees are coddled and the Green stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.1917. This negative correlation of -0.2934 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This negative correlation of -0.2934 suggests an inverse relationship between the perception that employees are coddled as an aspect of poor work-life balance and the Green stage. Individuals operating within the Green value system tend to associate less with this view of work-life balance.

From the lens of the Green value system, this negative correlation reflects the concern for the well-being of all individuals and the recognition of the interconnectedness of various aspects of life.

Those in the Green stage may be less inclined to perceive measures to promote a healthy work-life balance as coddling employees. Instead, they may view such efforts as essential for fostering a holistic and sustainable approach to individual and organizational well-being, recognizing the interdependence between personal fulfillment and professional productivity.

The Green worldview values cooperation, unity, and the harmonious integration of different spheres of life. Individuals operating within this value system may perceive an imbalance between work and personal life as detrimental to the overall well-being of individuals, communities, and the broader ecosystem.

Furthermore, the Green value system emphasizes systems thinking and recognizing the complex interplay between various factors. From this perspective, the negative correlation could stem from an understanding that a lack of work-life balance can have far-reaching consequences for individuals and the broader social and environmental contexts in which they operate.

However, it is essential to note that this negative correlation does not necessarily imply a dismissal of concerns about workplace productivity or a lack of commitment to professional goals. Instead, it may reflect a holistic approach to balancing various aspects of life, recognizing that individual well-being and organizational success are interdependent and mutually reinforcing.

In our analysis of the poll "21 skills that pay you forever (by Jeremiah Teo / 赵汉昇 [2])," we found an intriguing positive correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.395 between the Ability to self-analyze / Slightly Agree and the Green stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.2785. This positive correlation of 0.395 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This positive correlation of 0.395 suggests a relationship between slightly agreeing that the ability to self-analyze is a valuable skill and individuals operating within the Green stage of value system development. Those aligned with the Green worldview tend to exhibit a higher association with recognizing the importance of self-analysis.

The Green worldview values a holistic, systems-thinking approach, acknowledging that individuals are not isolated entities but integral parts of larger systems. Self-analyzing and gaining insights into one's thoughts, emotions, and behaviors is crucial for personal development and understanding one's role and impact within these interconnected systems.

It is important to note that this positive correlation does not necessarily imply a disregard for other valuable skills or a sole focus on self-analysis within the Green value system. Instead, it acknowledges that self-awareness and personal growth are fundamental to a holistic individual and collective well-being approach.

Furthermore, the Green value system emphasizes unity, cooperation, and sustainability. Self-analysis can foster empathy, emotional intelligence, and a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives, essential for building harmonious relationships, promoting collaboration, and developing sustainable solutions that benefit all stakeholders.

From the lens of the Green value system, this correlation reflects the emphasis on personal growth, self-awareness, and the recognition of the interconnectedness between individual well-being and the well-being of the broader community and ecosystem.

In our analysis of the poll "What qualities and abilities do good leaders use when building successful teams?" we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.1222 between the Influential and the Green stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0431. This negative correlation of -0.1222 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This negative correlation of -0.1222 could be explained from 3 points of view:

1) Companies operating within the Green value system:

Companies that embody the Green value system would likely view the negative correlation between "Influential" and the Green stage as indicating that authentic leadership is not about wielding power or influence over others. Instead, they would see effective leadership as fostering unity, cooperation, and a shared sense of purpose within the organization. These companies would prioritize building successful teams through empowerment, consensus-building, and a focus on the well-being of all stakeholders rather than relying on the influence of a few key individuals.

2) Teams operating within the Green value system:

Within teams operating in the Green value system, the negative correlation would suggest that the most influential leaders are not those who seek to exert influence over others but rather those who can facilitate a collaborative, holistic approach to problem-solving and decision-making. Green-aligned teams would likely value leaders who can help the team recognize the interconnectedness of their work and its impact on the broader community and environment rather than those who rely on their authority or status.

3) Individuals within the Green value system:

For individuals who embody the Green value system, the negative correlation between "Influential" and the Green stage would indicate a preference for leaders who can foster a sense of unity, cooperation, and shared responsibility within the team. These individuals would be drawn to leaders who can help the team see the bigger picture and work towards sustainable, holistic solutions rather than those who seek to exert influence or control over the group.

The negative correlation of -0.1222 suggests that within the Green value system, the most influential leaders can facilitate a collaborative, systems-thinking approach that prioritizes the entire community's well-being rather than those who rely on their influence or authority. This insight aligns with the Green value system's emphasis on unity, cooperation, and a concern for the greater good.
